TWI Foods Project Launched

As the frost of a Canadian winter begins to thaw, HKC Construction is proud to kick off 2024 with a landmark project that embodies our commitment to excellence, adaptability, and teamwork. The TWI Foods expansion project—a complex, large-scale addition in a challenging climate—marks not just the start of a new year, but a testament to our ability to deliver results under pressure. Here’s an inside look at how we’re turning ambitious blueprints into reality.

Embracing the Challenge: Building Through Winter

Winter in Canada is no stranger to construction delays, but for HKC, it’s an opportunity to showcase resilience. “The first project of the year sets the tone for everything that follows,” shares our team lead. “Working through snow, cold, and unpredictable conditions isn’t easy, but it’s where our expertise shines.”

The TWI Foods project, located between 40 Shaft Road and 42 Shaft Road, involves constructing a 5,000-square-foot addition to the existing facility. From the outset, the team faced the dual challenges of harsh weather and intricate site logistics. Yet, as Site Superintendent Scott Chuback explains, meticulous planning and relentless execution have kept progress on track.

Progress Report: Laying the Foundation

Since breaking ground, HKC has achieved critical milestones:

  • Site Servicing Completed: All necessary groundwork, including asphalt removal and excavation, finalized.

  • Excavation: 37 of 42 designated locations dug and prepped.

  • Structural Foundations: 27 footings and 25 piers poured, forming the backbone of the addition.

“We’ve moved swiftly to establish a solid foundation, every footing and pier is precision-placed to ensure stability for the structure ahead.”

Next Steps: Precision Meets Innovation

With the foundation in place, the team is now focused on:

  1. Grade Beams & Piers: Completing remaining piers and pouring grade beams along the east elevation to finalize the structural corridor.

  2. Backfilling & Elevation Adjustments: Preparing the site for the slab-on-grade installation by backfilling to the required elevation.

  3. Demolition of Cantilevered Soffits: Removing existing architectural elements that conflict with the incoming steel structure, slated for arrival in the coming weeks.

“This phase is about balancing precision with speed, every step is timed to ensure seamless integration of new materials and systems.”

Why This Project Matters

The TWI Foods expansion isn’t just another construction job—it’s a reflection of HKC’s core values:

  • Adaptability: Thriving in sub-zero temperatures and adapting workflows to winter’s demands.

  • Collaboration: Coordinating between engineers, laborers, and clients to maintain transparency and trust.

  • Innovation: Leveraging advanced techniques to pour concrete and manage materials in freezing conditions.

“Canadian winters test every team’s limits, but overcoming these challenges is what makes HKC stand out. We’re not just building structures; we’re building confidence.”

A Glimpse Into the Future

As steel components arrive and vertical construction begins, the TWI Foods site will transform rapidly. The project is on track to meet its deadlines, with HKC’s team ensuring that quality never compromises pace.

“This is just the beginning, the next few weeks will see this site evolve from groundwork to a fully framed structure, proof of what teamwork and determination can achieve.”
